2/6 Blog
In this class I keep thinking about my writing process. I
tend to be very distracted; I either get bogged down on details instead of
continuing to work or everything is more interesting than what I’m doing. Thus,
I create elaborate outlines to keep me focused, but then I have to edit.
Sentence editing is my least favorite part of my writing process because I find
it more difficult than big picture writing (I already know what I’m saying so it’s
boring, I like doing other people’s).
I have already noticed in my sessions how deeply personal
this process can be. Last Wednesday, while brainstorming and looking at paper
structure, my student explained how she edits on her computer (putting bullet
points after the paragraph so she doesn’t forget) because she didn’t want me to
think “she was doing something weird.” This
didn’t strike me as weird at all, but it did make me consider how self-conscious
we can be about how we write. I think this is where encouragement from a tutor
is vital. I have also found humor to be useful, despite the warnings in TAW. I do try to stay away from jokes
about their writing, even “humor related to the subject matter,” because that
could make students more self-conscious when the whole point is create a sense
of camaraderie.
